Background
On September 1st, 2004, 49 armed terrorists seized Middle School #1 in Beslan, Russia. Thus began a hostage situation that ultimately claimed the lives of 338 innocent civilians at the end of three tension filled days. This tragedy has been described as Russia's 9/11. The seminar will cover what actually happened at Beslan, how it was planned and executed, and most importantly why you need to study it.

Why Does it Matter to You?
Whether you are a first responder, a tactical team member, a chief of police, a school superintendent, an intelligence analyst, or an emergency manager, there are many lessons to be learned from Beslan. Why should we study Beslan? There is nothing about Beslan that could not happen in any town in our country. Simply put, it represents an attack against a soft target that mandates a response requiring a high level of training and coordination. And preparation for Beslan brings our agencies to a higher level of readiness that can always be "ratcheted down" to deal with lesser crisis.
