Campuses: Vulnerable Targets

The events at Virginia Tech have forced campus security into the spotlight. A shooter or a terrorist on a campus, is there a distinction? In a report for MIPT, University of Central Oklahoma President and MIPT Board Member, W. Roger Webb, discusses the security challenges facing higher education leaders for a community disposed toward freedom. Webb, the former Oklahoma Commissioner of Public Safety, offers insight from an academic as well as law enforcement background, providing questions every campus president and security personnel should be asking.

MIPT, UCO Host 2007 National Campus Security Summit

The question of campus security goes far beyond lockdowns and increased patrols. The 2007 National Campus Security Summit, to be held May 30 on the campus of the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Oklahoma, will take a deeper look at security challenges while offering actionable ideas and setting aside conventional wisdom. “After the Virginia Tech shootings the spotlight is shining squarely on every college president and senior campus administrator in this country,” said UCO President Roger Webb, “This National Campus Security Summit will address all the issues and not just the ones making the headlines.” “This is all about practical ideas, affordable ideas that will improve protection while maintaining an environment of openness,” said Donald R. Hamilton, MIPT Executive Director. The one-day Summit is being hosted by UCO, the Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism (MIPT), the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU).

FBI Director Addresses Special Agents in Charge at MIPT
|
|
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Robert Mueller visited the Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism (MIPT) in early May to address the heads of all 56 FBI field offices. The Special Agents in Charge met at MIPT for a two-day conference, May 2-3, 2007. The event highlights both the continuing efforts of the FBI and MIPT’s role as a focal point for the prevention of terrorism. “The MIPT credo, ‘Countering Terrorism with Knowledge,’ made us the perfect venue for this conference,” said MIPT Executive Director Donald R. Hamilton. “What could be more appropriate than for FBI supervisors from all over the country to meet in an auditorium overlooking the Oklahoma City National Memorial, the site of the most deadly domestic terrorism act in American history.”
